How to Make a Classic Jewelry Wall Organizer with Dowels

It’s been a busy week! With our Second week of the One Room Challenge come and gone, our Easter Egg Hop with the East Coast Moms and now, the April DIY Challenge – All in One Week!!! Good thing our monthly challenge item – dowels  – fit nicely into my One Room Challenge Plans 😉

Here’s the tutorial for how to make a classic jewelry wall organizer with dowels!

This jewelry wall hanger was inspired by the decorative paddle I found (and posted about here.)  If you’ve been following our One Room Challenge posts thus far (you can see Week One //here// and Week Two’s Closet Progress //here//) you’ll know that I had to ‘abandon ship’ on my first design plan. Nevertheless, I was still able to integrate this nautical-inspired piece into my space! Phew! haha One less thing to worry about. (PS. Make sure you are following us on Instagram for ORC updates! And subscribe to our email newsletter to make sure you don’t miss a post. The big reveal will happen the first week of May.)

Meantime, here’s what you need to make the jewelry wall organizer (contains affiliate links):

First thing I did was to cut down my dowels to size. I had two different thicknesses, but that didn’t matter much. I made sure I had four pieces, each measuring 17″ long. Essentially I wanted 6″ of the dowel to stick out on either side of my backer board. (This will all become more clear in a minute.)

The pipe ties I bought were copper; which is lovely but it didn’t really tie in with the scheme of my room. So I spray painted them oil rubbed bronze.

Next, I used stain cloths in Natural Oak to give my dowels a richer tone. (Did you see my post about our new playroom storage unit made from old kitchen cabinets? I used the stain cloths for that entire project. Honestly, I love these things. So great for simple DIYs!)

Since I was using a piece of old scrappy wood that had a couple of divets and splits in it, I actually didn’t really measure the spacing of my dowels. I just eye balled it, using the pipe ties to secure the dowels to the backer board. Once I had them in the right position, I added a bit of wood glue to give them extra grip.

And that’s it! Hung on the VERY BLUE wall in the master closet!! eeek!! I can’t get over this colour. I’m just in love with it and it’ll be the perfect accent to what is going to happen in the rest of the Master Bedroom over the next month or so.

I’m also pretty jazzed with how this simple project has helped me to finally organize my necklaces 🙂

Here are all the other bloggers’ links to their dowel projects! Don’t forget to hop around 🙂
