What is Monkey Bread?

Only the thought of this bubble bread makes my mouth water! This soft treat is made of small dough pieces with cinnamon and sugar. Although most people think this is a classic American dish, its origins can be traced back to Hungary.

The monkey bread recipe as we know it today derives from a Hungarian dessert called Arany Galuska or “the golden dumpling”. This amazing dish was brought to America by Hungarian immigrants in the 20th century.

The pull-apart bread was popularized in America when Nancy Reagan served it at the White House for Christmas.

How to make Monkey Bread Recipe with 1 Can of Biscuits – Step by Step Guide

Here are the exact steps on how to make monkey bread from biscuits:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400℉ (200℃). Prepare a simple or fluted tube pan (if you don’t have a tube pan, you can use a normal pan) with cooking spray or butter to avoid any sticking of the dough.
  2. Take the biscuits out of the can and cut them into small pieces ( about the size of a small walnut because the dough will increase in size).

Now, it’s time to assemble the monkey bread with biscuits into the pan!

  1. Melt the butter. You can do it in the microwave or on the stove.  Once melted, pour the butter into a bowl and keep it at hand.
  2. Prepare the sugar and cinnamon mixture. You can mix them in a bowl to dip the dough pieces one by one. Add as much sugar or cinnamon as you like, depending on your taste. Keep in mind that cinnamon is very flavored, so a small quantity goes a long way. Sugar will melt in the oven giving you monkey bread the soft, sticky texture.

You’re almost at the end of this simple monkey bread recipe! All that’s left to do is to assemble the pieces, and bake!

  1. Dip the small pieces of dough in melted butter, then coat them in the cinnamon and sugar mixture one by one. Be careful not to burn your fingers!
  2. Put the pieces in the pan and apply small amounts of pressure. This technique will help stick together the small pieces, so your monkey bread with canned biscuits won’t fall apart once you take it out of the pan.
  3. As you place the pieces in the pan, you can add chopped nuts and dried fruits for a plus of flavor. There is no rule on what you can use. You can choose whatever you like.

If you have any melted butter left, you can pour it into the pan.

  1. Once the oven is heated, place the pan inside on a lower level (to avoid burning). If your oven has a fan, it’s best to use it!
  2. Let the monkey bread from biscuits sit in the oven for about 30 minutes, until it has a golden brownish color.
  3. Take it out of the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes.
  4. Take the bubble-bread out of the pan and enjoy it!

Substitution of ingredients

Now that you know how to make monkey bread with biscuits, here are some alternatives for this easy monkey bread.

If you don’t have Pillsbury biscuits, you can try to make monkey bread from scratch. Here is an easy way to replace the biscuit dough:

  • Mix 1 ½ cups of flour with 2 teaspoons of dry yeast. Dissolve 4 tablespoons of granulated sugar and a pinch of vanilla extract in 1 cup of milk.
  • Add the milk to the flour and yeast (the milk must not be hot because it will reduce the effectiveness of the yeast). Mix them until you have a non-sticky dough. You can add more flour if needed. Add melted butter until the dough has an elastic texture. Knead the dough and let it sit in a warm place for 30 minutes or until it doubles its size.
  • After the dough is ready, follow the steps for the monkey bread with biscuits.

Don’t be shy to spice things up! Add any dried fruit or nut that you like! Add orange zest or different flavored extracts!

This is the great thing about monkey bread. It is a simple recipe that allows you to make the best of it. You can use different flavors every time you do this recipe.

Another idea is to use a mixture of brown sugar and melted butter to coat the bubble bread in the pan. This will make your dessert softer and sweeter.
