DIY Twig and Book Pages Advent Calendar

Home decor

Is it normal to be excited for yard clean-up? No? Well, then I’m not-normal and proud of it πŸ™‚ Yes, I absolutely love those days when it’s cool and crisp and we head out onto the yard to tidy up the branches, leaves and other outdoor stuff ahead of the long winter.

WHY? It’s basically hard labour. Well, because that’s where I end up getting most of my seasonal decor inspiration. Last year, we went for walks by the shore and I collected (non-poisonous) dried berries, cedar boughs and driftwood that I used around our stockings. This year, we have a few hedge bushes that were OUT OF CONTROL – but so spindly and perfect. So I went at them with my clippers.

So here’s the thing. Not only am I obsessed with natural seasonal decor (always), but this year for some reason, I’m also obsessed with old book pages. Later this week, I’ll have a tutorial for how I made an awesome holiday wreath out of an old and dated political science text book. And today, I’m going to show you the easy steps to creating your own DIY Twig and Book Pages Advent Calendar! It’s part of the Home For Christmas hop in conjunction with and πŸ™‚

You might have caught the recent post I did about this year being all about the neutrals and metallics. Le. Love. So I stuck with that theme for this project. I plucked all the leaves off my twig branches, leaving the florets on the ends where possible. (This particular plant is called a spirea in case you’re wondering.) Then I spray painted my branches with Krylon Metallic spray paint in Copper.

You can use a dollar store clear vase for this next part, but I had this lonely thrift store hurricane lamp I wasn’t using. So I filled it up a bit with pinecones (also from the dollar store) and stuck my coppery branches in. It already looks great and this would look good almost all year round!Metallic spray painted twigs for the holidays

But let’s get to the Advent part. I’ve been meaning to create an advent calendar for YEARS – but for whatever reason, I’ve never gotten around to doing it. But I had my book pages for inspiration. You see, I had bought this old gardening book at the thrift store for about $2 a while back. I loved the way the pages felt. But someone had written all over it and the spine was falling apart. Basically, I bought it to be a crafting supply.

I ended up cutting the book pages into leaf shapes and feather shapes – 24 in total and each completely different from one another. (Disclaimer – I used my Silhouette Cameo for the cutting part, but you could easily do this by hand or with an X-acto knife if your leaves and feathers are less intricate.)Book Pages Cut out with a Silhouette Cameo

The last step was to add the numbers to each cut-out, one through 24, thread some twine through them and hang them on my metallic branches.Cut out Book Page Shapes
