Hand-Lettered Glittering Wood Slice Ornaments {Creative Team Post}

Home decor

It’s our last crafty and creative post of 2017 and I really love this last minute, simple project from Creative Team members Sustain My Craft Habit! I hope you enjoy – and don’t forget to check out more about The Creative Team and watch for more posts soon 🙂

Silent Night has to be my favourite Christmas carol of all time. It’s such a classic and in those first couple of sentences, reminds me what Christmas is all about. So it felt perfect to create some Christmas decor with words from this song which dates all the way back to 1818!

Hi there! This is Jane from Sustain my Craft Habit, a DIY craft and home decor blog where my sister Sonja and I share new nature-inspired projects each week. We’re so happy to be back again here on DIY Passion sharing a new project with you. In case you missed it, last month we made a Buffalo-check wood crate gift box.

Hand-Lettered Glittering Wood Slice Ornaments

Two years ago I made these glittering stencilled wood slice ornaments with birch branch slices. They still look sparkly, beautiful and add a “rustic glam” touch to our Christmas tree. Some glittering hand-lettered wood slice ornaments seemed like the perfect complement. You can obviously choose any phrase you’d like. If you’re like me and beautiful hand-lettering doesn’t come naturally, consider finding an online font you like and base your lettering on that. For example, Creative Market has lots of beautiful script fonts which you can use as a guide. You’re also welcome to come by our blog and grab our printable template for these wooden Christmas ornaments.

Start by roughly tracing the wood slices onto paper to make a general oval guide.

Practice the lettering design on the guide you created.Hand lettered wood slice ornaments

Copy the lettering you just practiced, lightly onto the wood slice with a pencil. Make sure the lettering is centered and make any adjustments as needed.DIY Hand lettered wood slice holiday ornaments

Once you’re happy with your pencil sketch, it’s time to start glittering! Work in small sections at a time since the Mod Podge dries quickly. Use a fine brush to trace over the pencil marks with the glue.

How to add glitter to wood slices

Immediately cover the area you just painted with a generous amount of one of the glitter colours. Very lightly press on the glitter to make sure it sticks to the glue. Gently pour the glitter off of the wood slice and tap the backside gently to remove any loose pieces.

Use a dry, clean paintbrush to brush off any stray glitter from the surface of the wood slice ornament.

Repeat with the other wood slices. If needed, use a toothpick to remove any excess glitter.

Let the lettered wood slices dry. You can optionally spray the glitttered wood slice ornaments with a fine coat of hairspray to keep the glitter in place. Let the hairspray dry completely and then attach baker’s twine or a ribbon of your choice for hanging.

While these glammed-up wood slices would look beautiful as ornaments on the tree, I hung them in a staggered row on an interesting piece of driftwood. I think it makes a beautiful little holiday decoration for my living room wall!

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas holiday with your family and friends. What is your favourite Christmas carol?
