Inside: A fast and easy DIY project that uses old gift bags to create fun, holiday-inspired art!
I keep saying that I won’t write another post until next year and then I come up with an idea and feel like I need to capture it in a post! Yesterday, we had a snow day and I had all of 15 minutes to spend alone in my still-under-construction DIY studio. I had a whole bunch of leftover gift bags in my wrapping closet. (Did you see how I transformed a Billy bookshelf into a wrapping station?!) And when I say leftover, I mean they were taking over the space. I knew I wasn’t going to use them all to wrap gifts this year, so I decided to use a few of them to create a holiday inspired art piece for the playroom!

What you need for this gift bag craft
- an assortment of old gift bags (or you could buy new ones, it’s up to you!)
- scissors
- tape
- a few frames
- card stock or photo mats if you want to mount your art
This really is so very simple. Just measure your frame and cut card stock to size or use a photo mat. Then measure two coordinating bags, including one with some sort of design on the front.
Use a patterned bag as a backer and the design as the ‘art’ work and secure both of them, one on top of the other, with tape and then to the card stock.
Pop it in the frame. Like really. It’s that easy.
This year, I decided to decorate a corner of the playroom with some of the decorations that didn’t work or fit on the main floor. I love that P has a colourful splash of Christmas down here and this little repurposed gift bag art fills out the corner so nicely!
I also used an old gift bag to cut out a few stars and create the really fun banner on the playroom door. It’s just strung up with twine. Really nothing fancy. It’s so funny that I’m returning to the old school ways of decorating with what I have on hand. I find it so much more fun and rewarding.
I don’t even know where we got that little tree with the coloured lights on it, but P absolutely adores it. And the stocking hung on the toy shelf is for Buddy the dog… I think Santa is going to bring him some pig ears this year 😉
