How to Make a DIY Moon Phase Wall Hanging

Home decor

Over the last year or so, I’ve started to really pay attention to the moon. I know, I know. It sounds a bit woo-woo. But if you ask any night shift nurse, transit driver, talk show host etc. they will tell you they believe people are affected by the moon in ways we cannot fully comprehend. I’ve been following people like Ezzie Spencer and Jess Lively, who both profess to be able to use the Moon Cycles to help them understand their own energy. Whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter much to me.

What matters is that the moon now reminds me to think about my energy – how I’m spending it, how I’m absorbing it and how I, like the moon, reflect light. So I figured I make a sweet little DIY Moon Phase Wall Hanging for my new office to act as a reminder!

Here’s what you need to make a Moon Phase Wall Hanging:

I started this project on Facebook Live haha. I explained the philosophy behind the project and also demonstrated how to use the power tools involved – including the hole saw.

The first thing you need to do is clamp your piece of wood solidly to your work surface. Then, using the drill with the hole saw attachment, create five holes. And keep the cut-out piece!

A couple tips to keep in mind when using the hole saw – you want your drill’s torque set high and you want a fully charged battery. Wear work gloves and eye protection – mmmmmkay? No one wants to lose an eye over a silly wall hanging project amiright?!?

Next, use the mouse sander to soften all the rough edges and get rid of the splintery bits (watch the video, I explain it all in there)… and paint the moon phases onto your pieces with the extreme sheen paint. I chose pewter and silver for my colour combo, but a gold and silver would also be really pretty.

With five circles, you want a full moon, two half moons and two crescent moons. Using your twine, hang the ‘moons’ from your stick at varying heights. Start with the full moon in the centre and work outwards.

I am excited to hang this in my new office – which is in a total state of DISASTER at the moment. I’m working on a new design plan for the space. Like TOP TO BOTTOM overhaul.

What do you think? Do you love the MOON???

Peace and love,
