Inside: A fun and fast DIY project to make your own natural, scented, air fresheners that will help combat pet odors and are non-toxic to animals.
That weird time between Christmas and New Years is always full of creative ideas but no desire to start big projects LOL! So I leave these fun and easy DIYs to this time of the year because it doesn’t require going outside, making a huge mess and you can do this in your sweat pants. I’m clearly on a huge cleaning kick right now.
I can sense that 2019 is going to be a big year for me and for DIY Passion and I think my subconscious wants the house to be in order and ready to kick butt. Today, I’m using up some supplies from my baking cupboard and some essential oils to make a DIY Air Freshener to Combat Pet Odors!
Supplies to make DIY Air Fresheners

- Baking soda (1 cup per jar)
- Printed Wax Paper
- Mason Jar
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Lemongrass Essential Oil
How to Assemble your Air Freshener
Let’s talk about baking soda first, shall we? I love it as a natural air freshener and odor absorbing agent. It is amazing to use while vacuuming and doing laundry and I frequently use it combine with oxy bleach to combat stubborn pet stains.
I chose it for this odor eliminator because it is just so good at absorbing! So the first step is to pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into your mason jar.
Now, let’s talk about these essential oils and why I chose them. Lemongrass is a great disinfectant and, in fact, you can even turn it into an air freshening spray! I added about 15 drops of the lemongrass oil to the 1/2 cup of baking soda and then gave the jar a good hard shake.
Then I added another 15 drops of the lavender essential oil. You could just make this air freshener with lavender alone and it would be fine, but I like the combination of the citrusy lemongrass with the flowery lavender.
Once those drops are in there, add the second half of the baking soda, put the lid on your mason jar and give it a really good shake again.
The last step is to cut your wax paper to fit over the top of the mason jar and make little holes or slits in it so that some of the scent will escape the jar.
I added sprigs of dried lavender to mine to make it more visually appealing and then sealed it up!
