How to Clean a Keurig Coffee Machine

Cleaning Hacks

Inside: Clear instructions for how to clean a coffee pod or K-cup coffee machine; using vinegar, distilled water, how often to clean it.

To say I love coffee is an understatement. I’m actively planning to have a little coffee bar in my new office space in our newly renovated basement and I’m seriously considering adding in a Keurig style coffee maker.

But here’s the challenge – I love coffee, but I can’t stand the smell of stale coffee. I’m obsessed with keeping our current drip coffee maker clean and I wanted to make sure I knew how to clean a Keurig Coffee Machine before making the investment.

What is a K-Cup or Keurig Coffee Machine?

A K-cup machine is a single serving coffee maker that allows the user to insert a small plastic cup containing coffee and filter pre-heated water through it to create a customized cup of coffee or tea.

How often should your Keurig Machine be cleaned?

I like to clean my drip coffee maker at least once every couple of weeks. I’ve written an extremely comprehensive post about how to deep clean your coffee maker here. But when it comes to a Keurig, you can clean it every three to six months depending on how often you are using it.

The trick to keeping your machine healthy and running well is descaling it each time.  By the way, you can also save the grounds from your spent coffee pods and use them in all sorts of ways around the house! Check out this post about the Incredible ways to use Coffee Grounds.

Prep Time: 2 minutes
Active Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 4 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Keep your Keurig machine running fast and well by cleaning it with these hacks once every three to six months.

Materials

  • white vinegar
  • distilled water
  • descaling solution

Instructions

  1. Put an empty mug under the reservoir and drain any remaining water from the Keurig reservoir.
  2. Remove the filter (if you are using one).

If you are using official Keurig descaling solution:

1. Unplug the machine and add the solution into the reservoir mixing it with a 1:1 ratio of solution to water.

2. Turn the machine on, place a large mug on the machine and allow it to 'brew' through the descaling solution. It will probably create a lot of foam - but that means it's working!

3. Fill reservoir with clean water and run it through again. Now your machine is clean.

If you are using vinegar and distilled water.

Repeat the above steps, but instead of the descaling solution using a 1:1 vinegar and distilled water solution.
