Plans for my Airy and Bright Home Office

Have you been watching my IG Stories? Because if so, you’ll know that my office has been…how do you say? A HOT MESS for the last year or so 🙂 It’s been a room in transition, as I test out functions and lay outs and the types of furniture that I truly need. Here’s the thing, offices have great potential to be pretty spaces. But, I actually work in my office and run two businesses out of it – every single day. So I need the function to come before the pretty – nomesayin’?

I’m dubbing this project #OperationOffice if you want to follow on on IG Stories too. I’ll create a highlight reel to capture all the behind the scenes shenanigans.

I’m finally at the point where I feel like I know what I need in the space to effectively do my work and what I’d like to have in the space in order to have it feel pretty and clean. The office is actually a sunroom that is directly off our dining room and is visible from most other rooms on the main floor. It has one entire wall of almost floor to ceiling windows, vaulted 13-foot ceilings and a sliding door to a small sundeck. It’s also sunken off the dining room by an 8-inch step.

The layout has been a challenge because there is only one wall upon which to place furniture and the ceiling height dwarfs furniture, while the step down can create odd sight lines from the main floor. Oy.

In any event, I’m forging ahead. Dan MADE me a desk yesterday (I’ll share it soon!! It’s such a simple DIY and I love love love that he did it for me as a gift <3) I don’t have everything worked out yet, but the vision is starting to come together.

I know I need a ceiling fan, a cozy reading and meditation chair, a rug, bookshelf, paper filing things, and maybe some decorative accents. I haven’t decided on paint colour or treatment (I’m seriously toying with the idea of a paint stencil??) or window treatments. I’ve had $30 Ikea panels in here for the last year or so and they are great, but they don’t filter the light as well as I’d like.

I’ve rounded up my top picks in terms of look so far. What do you think???  (contains affiliate links)

Hope you’re all enjoying the week…

Hey Erin, I really liked your post. I'm also thinking of making a small working space in my room as I recently started a blog and a small business with my friend. Creating an office space in the room has been a challenge for me and I'm still getting around the things like what furniture and tools I need and how can I arrange it without making the room too stuffy.

Your post gave me an idea at least to start with planning. Nice to know you are following your passion :) I intend to do so myself. Keep posting your experiences.
