That’s right – we’ve invested in a new tool. And man oh man – is it FANCY.
While we haven’t pulled the trigger on any power tool purchases (though one is in the works), the tool we’re talking about today is a tech tool – really, it’s a blog tool. And it has CHANGED OUR LIVES. (Note the use of caps to emphasize our level of excitement and an increase in volume. We aren’t yelling…we’re just THAT excited!)
We are talking about CoSchedule. If I were to add a tag line to this product it would be “The Busy Blogger’s Best Friend.”
Let’s take it back a bit. Blogging is A LOT of work. From brainstorming projects to paying for materials, doing the project, photographing it, writing about it, editing it, and then promoting it on umpteen social media channels, it can quickly add up and become very overwhelming.
For the longest time, we were using a hodgepodge system of Google Docs, colour coded calendars, and various social media scheduling conventions. Sometimes just that part of blogging could take an entire 1/2 day.
Now enter CoSchedule. Our new best friend.
CoSchedule is a handy-dandy, easy to install plug-in that works really well with WordPress. There is also a web-based app if that’s how you roll. We like the integrated one. A screen grab of part of our January calendar on CoSchedule looks like this.
What does it do? Well *drum roll* – after you write your post, you simply click on the Calendar icon WITHIN WordPress and it opens your CoSchedule account. In there, you schedule your post for a date and time and then, RIGHT IN THE SAME PLACE, you can schedule your social media! And it’s all drag and drop. Incredibly intuitive. *claps and applause for the CoSchedule development team*
There are tons of options for mapping out the schedule. For example, it let’s you publish your social media as soon as your post is published, 1 hour after that, 3 hours after that, days later – really, it makes customizing each post and each social medium that much easier.
The best part? If you reschedule that post by dragging it to another day on the calendar? CoSchedule understands and reschedules all the social shares automatically.
No more going back into Facebook, Twitter etc individually every time you change your mind! OH! And because it’s all integrated, there’s no need to copy and paste any short links that can cause strange error messages on Facebook shares or cause your feed to populate in weird ways. (If you don’t understand that last sentence, don’t worry. Facebook is STILL an enigma to this blogger! Though we do have a post all about why bloggers can’t and won’t quit Facebook.)
Oh but that’s not all! Another pillar of blogging that can be hard to manage is analytics. Basically, that’s having a good handle on where your posts are more successful and where they aren’t picking up much traction. CoSchedule keeps track of all of that for you! It gathers metrics on all your shares, comments, pins, tweets, likes and so on. And it gives it to you in numeric and graph form. Amaze.(Note: those aren’t our metrics – but that’s how they are displayed and we love it.)
Using this plug-in has already saved us buckets of time and it has helped us to remember to re-promote older posts, which helps us boost traffic and engagement (two big buzz words in blogland.)
Oh and we can’t forget to mention the customer service. We had a couple of questions about the installation process and the team at CoSchedule was speedy to respond and very helpful. They seem very committed to the product and eager to make sure that users have the best experience possible – which is refreshing.
